Local Choir Marks Eight Decades of Musical Excellence

Local choir celebrating 80 years of music

A beloved local choral group is marking a remarkable milestone this year as they celebrate eight decades of bringing music to the community. Two special concerts are planned to commemorate this significant anniversary.

On Saturday, May 27th, the ensemble will present Fauré's Requiem alongside the Choral Suite from Karl Jenkins' The Armed Man at Saint John's Church in Walton. Looking ahead to the autumn season, they're preparing for a November 25th performance of Handel's Messiah with chamber orchestra accompaniment at Saint Thomas's Church in Brampton. Both concerts will showcase talented soloists from the region and beyond.

Adam Green, the group's Musical Director, will guide the ensemble through these anniversary performances. There's also a complimentary concert scheduled at Chesterfield Library on Saturday, May 6th at 11:45am. "Leading these anniversary concerts is a tremendous honor," he shares. "We're celebrating decades of local musical heritage, and we're excited to continue this tradition for years to come."

The choir began in 1937, originally established as a labor choir for the community. By 1940, they evolved into their current formation when they received backing from the Co-operative Education Department, which led them to rehearse at the Co-op building on Elder Way. The name change reflected this new partnership and broader community focus.
